Hovik Report post Posted March 5, 2008 I just thought the comment about us "stateside" folk not "getting" electro was a bit condescending. I see why you would say that, but it's the internet and you're reading text. I'm sure somebody who's contributing to the thread and giving us something new wouldn't have a condescending mind... drc Report post Posted March 5, 2008 He's been making some garbage track choices lately... Markus Shulz is a lot better IMO. Don't they play a little bit different tracks anyway(?). At least when I used to listen to their mixes they did.
Hovik Report post Posted March 5, 2008 Don't they play a little bit different tracks anyway(?). At least when I used to listen to their mixes they did. Very similar... Armin's sets usually start with 30 minutes of good melodic tracks and then he proceeds to pounding the shit out of my ears... I wish the whole set would just be melodic a bit slower tracks, and this is where Markus Shultz comes in, his sets usually are more melodic than Armin's. I like interesting beats and pieces in the songs. Straight up power bass ear harassment isn't my idea of a good time. The song has to have something catchy about it for me to like it, funky beats, interesting vocals, catchy tunes etc... Kaz2 - glad you like it

I just thought the comment about us "stateside" folk not "getting" electro was a bit condescending. not meant as condescending at all, and obviously my statement had some grounds if you totally reject a whole genre like that. You all in agreeance then that acts like Daft Punk, Justice, Felix Da Housecat are shit?? Europe a lot of times have had music styles popular for a while before it made it in the states, eg.s trance and progressive. EpDarks Report post Posted March 7, 2008 Yes I personally reject the genre because I find it to be aimed towards a popular crowd. Big chunky basslines do get people moving in clubs, but that doesn't make them high quality or intelligent. Daft Punk are legends, and I've seen them live. Not sure I'd call them electro... they pioneered french house and house music in general. The other 2 acts you mentioned I'm not fond of personally. And yes Europe does pioneer most of the great electronic music artists on the planet, I'll give you that. At least give us stateside folk the benefit of the doubt, we "get" electronic music here too. Of course you american crew do get electronic music, with great artists / djs like gabriel and dresden, erick morilo, danny tenaglia and great parties like the WMC. The guys are playing it for the love of the music and the party, from seeing Justice, Erol Alkan and 2 many DJs and the enthusiasm they have and the atmosphere they create I don't think there just in it cos they thinks it's popular. Music doesn't have to be intelligent to sound good, I think some people reject good music just because they don't find it underground or special enough even though it sounds good, gets a party going etc. And don't get me wrong, I do love intelligent stuff like the Notwist, James Holden, Quantic, Nathan Fake... EpDarks Report post Posted March 7, 2008 Perhaps electro in Europe carries a different connotation than it does in America. From what I've seen in America, for the most part, electro is the cheesy popular mainstream electronic music. I've seen it used heavily in top 40 clubs as a bridge between rap/pop and house. Electro is just not very well respected here. I have heard that electro has become quite popular in Europe and I'm curious as to why exactly, maybe you can shed some light on the subject?
