"The hardest thing about being a producer is explaining to your parents what you do for a living."

 

Every film produced is a business. It has two major departments- The Creative department (which is headed up by the Director) and the Business Department (which is headed by the Producer). Everybody who works for the creative department (actors, wardrobe, art, set, etc) answers to the director.... Everybody who works for the business dept (accountants, lawyers, support staff etc) answer to the Producer....

 

Directors make most of the decisions regarding the creative content of the film. Producers make ALL of the Business Decisions and USUALLY have a veto authority over (and HIRE/FIRE) their directors. In other words the Producer is the CEO of the Production.... The BUCK STOPS WITH HIM... If the director has a problem with an above the line (STAR) actor, ultimately the Producer makes the final decision as to what will happen.

 

Producers come in many shapes, sizes, descriptions and bring different skills to the table.

 

There are Executive Producers -these are usually LONG established "names" in the entertainment industry who can bring parties and deals together because of the respect and status they have in the industry.

 

There are LINE producers- These are the guys who handle the day to day operation of the film... The grind work... from hiring catering people and making sure they show up, to making sure the accounting and payroll departments are getting their numbers out.

 

There are Associate Producers- These have a smaller role on the picture and are usually being given the credit as a "thanks" for something they bring to the film... Lawyers for example are often given associate credits for being able to do all the agreements a film needs.

 

Then there are financing producers who are usually credited as just "PRODUCER"- These are people who know how to raise film financing. They find money. And its the hardest job in the business. They are the "investors". They share the profits... They can be PEOPLE, or they can be entire COMPANIES....
