  16. Just heard from a good source BMC in SF bought out SVAG as of Dec1.....Anyone confirm??? interesting article on the subject. Pricey is dicey: Hard times hit exotic brands Mark Rechtin | November 16, 2009 - 12:01 am ET LOS ANGELES -- The sharp drop this year in sales of ultraexpensive brands such as Bentley, Aston Martin and Lamborghini has led to some major casualties among exotic-car dealerships. That's especially true in California, which represents as much as a third of some exotic brands' entire North American sales and where some of the most glamorous and highest-profile superluxury showrooms are found. The implosions of Viken Keuylian's Orange County and Calabasas Lamborghini dealerships in Southern California were the year's most spectacular exotic-dealership closures. But they weren't the only ones. Exotic dealerships in Pasadena and Walnut Creek, Calif., as well as Las Vegas, have shut their Venetian blinds. Other stores are being sold. "If I was going to survive, I needed to consolidate," said Mark Chase, president of Symbolic Motors in San Diego. Chase is negotiating to sell his Silicon Valley Auto Group (Bentley-Lamborghini-Aston Martin-Rolls-Royce-Bugatti-Lotus-Spyker) to Jeff Qvale's British Motor Car Distributors in San Francisco. Chase didn't want to sell the stores, but the alternative was bankruptcy. Chase also shut down his showy Las Vegas Lamborghini-Bugatti dealership inside the ostentatious Palazzo hotel on the Strip. He now concentrates on his core exotic business in San Diego. "I was very heavily invested in inventory on the expensive side," Chase said. "Silicon Valley is going to lead us out of this recession. The territory is phenomenal. But I couldn't keep all the stores. The bigger you are, the harder you fall." Giacomo Mattioli, owner of Ferrari-Maserati stores in Beverly Hills and Silicon Valley had added a Maserati store in Pasadena that he hoped one day would include Ferrari. But when the five-year lease on the building came due in March, Mattioli scrapped the Pasadena enterprise. "The last year has not been one where you see a brand-new millionaire giving himself a present because he made a great deal," Mattioli said. "It's more the core base of clients who have been with us for many years. They obviously can still afford it, but everyone has been affected." Less well-to-do Through October, sales for many ultraexpensive brands in the United States were down sharply. Figures are estimates except for Maserati and Bentley. JAN.-OCT. 2009 JAN.-OCT. 2008 % Decline Aston Martin 950 1,400 –32% Bentley 1,071 2,333 –54% Ferrari 1,250 1,416 –12% Lamborghini 343 617 –44% Lotus 500 1,000 –50% Maserati 1,059 2,085 –49% Rolls-Royce 300 370 –19% Source: Automotive News Data Center Off by half Through October, Bentley's and Maserati's U.S. sales are off by about half compared with 2008, and Lamborghini is off an estimated 44 percent. "Bentley is our driving force, and they are way off," said Qvale of British Motor Cars. "Our goal is to sell 35 or 40 this year, and most years we've been double that. Everyone has had a stock problem at some point. But Bentley also did a pretty good job of getting ahead of the downturn and adjusting the business accordingly." Both Bentley and Aston Martin have cut production sharply. "The last 18 months have unquestionably been challenging for us and our dealer network," said Julian Jenkins, general manager of Aston Martin North America. "The key step has been to scale back production in the short term to balance dealer stock, maintain exclusivity and protect residuals." Aston Martin, which has 33 U.S. dealerships, has several locations going through buy-sells and is not replacing a dead franchise at Cole European in Walnut Creek in San Francisco's East Bay. Cole terminated the Aston franchise, leaving customers to go to Marin County or Silicon Valley instead. Still, Aston is expanding its dealer body with new locations in Austin, Texas; Orlando, Fla.; and Charlotte, N.C. Aston also recently began its first factory-backed certified pre-owned vehicle program. With seven dealerships in buy-sells and others failing, Lamborghini unveiled its first 0 percent financing program for 60 months for buyers with high credit scores. Lamborghini began the year with 31 dealerships. Despite the production cuts, dealers still have to contend with leftover inventory, and it takes only one Bentley or Lamborghini to carry the same floorplan expense as a row of Camrys. 'Caught in a storm' "Aston cranked up manufacturing when its new investors came on [in 2007]," said Brian Allan, general manager of the Galpin Premier Collection in Van Nuys, Calif., where Aston Martin sales are off 35 percent. "Then the world came to an end, and we got caught in a storm. There are a few dealers who overleveraged themselves that aren't going to survive. But those with paid-off properties or whose expense structure is covered by other franchises will be OK." A dealer source who declined to be identified said: "We have 2008 Astons stacking up. People are getting hammered on the residuals because Aston built too many cars. A Vantage that sells for $150,000 new is selling for $75,000 after two years, but the owner still owes $110,000. That is not a good equation." Some finance companies have tightened credit on exotic car lines. And Aston Martin still doesn't have a captive finance company after separating from Ford Motor Co. in 2007. Cutting back on credit Sources said Volkswagen Credit pulled back on lending for its Lamborghini and Bentley lines after its fiasco with Lamborghini dealer Keuylian. Desperately overextended on a Southern California vineyard, a commercial building in nearby Newport Beach and a Lotus dealership in Beverly Hills, Keuylian bilked VW Credit for $6 million to $20 million in floorplan loans to cover his other entities, according to an April plea bargain. Keuylian once sold 5 percent of the world's Lamborghinis to a clientele that included the likes of basketball star Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Keuylian's stores are now closed. VW spokesman Steve Keyes denied that VW Credit has become more conservative since that fallout. "Throughout the financial crisis, VCI has remained in the market and continues to maintain relationships with many high-end luxury dealers representing the Volkswagen Group brands," Keyes said. In the meantime, dealers struggle to hang on. Some fear that a return of the high-end luxury market may not come until 2011. Still, dealers such as Qvale expect the good times to return and justify his acquisition of Chase's Silicon Valley holdings . "Things have gotten better in the last few months," Qvale said. "Things are stabilizing in our market."
