Smash Boy Report post Posted January 13, 2010 http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1629575/2...113/story.jhtml The future of late-night talk shows as we know them remains up in the air, but that hasn't stopped the performers involved from continuing with their programs, nor has it gotten in the way of outsiders weighing in on the problems over at NBC. In the wake of Conan O'Brien's announcement that he would not host a 12:05 version of "The Tonight Show," Tuesday night's talkers were peppered with plenty of jabs and inspired ribbing about the issue. In his monologue on "The Tonight Show," O'Brien continued to pound NBC the same way he did on Monday. "My name is Conan O'Brien, and I may still be available for children's parties," the host cracked at the top of the show. He later welcomed "Deal or No Deal" host Howie Mandel to go through some of his career options (which included "Join the cast of next 'Twilight' movie as rare albino werewolf") and invited writer Deon Cole to explain why O'Brien is the "ho" to NBC's "pimp" ("Do you make people happy before they fall asleep?" he asked. "Has Charlie Sheen ever been on your couch?"). It was a clearly cathartic bit of comedy for O'Brien, though there was an underlying sadness to the whole affair (when he talked about watching Johnny Carson as a child and dreaming about hosting "The Tonight Show," there was more than a hint of melancholy in his voice). At least O'Brien knows he has allies. On Tuesday night's episode of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the host spent the first two segments of his show doing a prolonged Leno impression, right down to the giant prosthetic chin. It was an Andy Kaufman-esque bit of meta-comedy that totally buried both Leno and NBC. "Hello, I'm Jay Leno, and I'm taking over all the shows in late night," Kimmel said in his monologue. "[Conan] released a statement today that said, 'I won't participate in the destruction of 'The Tonight Show.' Fortunately, though, I will!" Kimmel went on to do a "Headlines" segment that mocked the signature Leno bit with profoundly unfunny examples like, "Vehicles may end drunken driving." Over on CBS, David Letterman was not as jokey but no less scathing. "I want to focus my thoughts about this NBC television debacle," Letterman said following his monologue. He noted that he used to be an NBC employee, referenced the rivalry between himself and Leno (referring to him as "Big Jaw" and doing a squeaky impression of him) and endorsed O'Brien's plight. "Don't kid yourselves: It's all about money," Letterman explained. "And as nice a guy as Conan is, he's a smart fellow. And he knows that if he takes a hike, he's going to lose an enormous sum of money. So, he just now says, 'Well, I'm not gonna follow Jay. You guys do something about it.' So now NBC has to do something about it. This whole mistake over there at NBC has cost them hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions and millions of dollars. They just want Conan to quit and go away and for Conan to do a show in his basement. That's what they want. That's exactly what they want. But he's a smart kid. He's not gonna do that. He's in there for the cash. Or they waive his non-compete clause so he can go to Fox. Or come here and take my job." As the feud between Leno and Letterman proved back in the '90s, a little healthy competition and a bit of controversy can go a long way. It's proven true again here, as each host (and yes, even Leno) seems to be sharper than they've been in quite some time. Jagata Report post Posted January 13, 2010 Conan got screwed, Leno just needs to retire like Johnny.
intence Report post Posted January 13, 2010 ive always been a fan of leno. in fact, im from east coast and when i went to LA i made sure i saw the tonight show in its prime before leno was to retire. i stayed in line at nbc head quarters at 7am just to get tickets. although i like leno a lot, i think its time for him to move on and step away from late night tv or tv in general. he is obviously preoccupied with other things like his jaylenosgarage website and magazine editorials. i think he only took the primetime job for 2 reasons: money and conan. they thought he would give conan a good lead in but with lenos poor ratings it just didnt work out. from the beginning i knew the leno show would fail in the primetime slot. ive only seen one FULL episode and that was the debut. everything just seemed unorganized and many segments were dumb like green car challenge and top 10 at 10. if it aint broke, why fix it? giving leno a half hour show is going to do what? nothing imo. a talk show with only ~20 of real air time can not cover a lot of stuff. that gives leno maybe 10 minutes for the news and another 10 minutes for ONE guest. pretty worthless imo. i am not sure how long lettermans contract is, but the dude is gettin old. letterman is bound to retire at some point. if conan was to still host a 11:30 time slot then when letterman does retire, it could give him a huge ratings/viewer boost. that is just my opinion although we dont know who might replace letterman. i dont remember how long exactly but it took leno many years to eventually surpass letterman in ratings and viewers. all it took was one incident ( the hugh grant thing ). sometimes i believe nbc had something to do with kanye west vma rant since the next day was lenos debut with kanye as one of the guests. who knows another thing is its pretty shitty to move conan, his family, and his crew all the way across the country for an amazing opportunity only to shatter it. with that said, conan and leno are friends in real life and hopefully leno does the right thing and RETIRE so conan can take back his 11:30 timeslot. just my thoughts

Suscipiet Report post Posted January 14, 2010 I never though Conan was funny, Leno isn't fantastic either, but I'd rather have him than Conan.

Hovik Report post Posted January 14, 2010 Leno was much better where he was. I think having 2 shows 40+ minutes was too much. They should just give them 30 each and be done with it. John Stewart and Stephen Colbert pull it off nicely and they're so much more fun to watch.

Falken Report post Posted January 14, 2010 First off i think Leno's a great guy and that Conan can be funny as hell sometimes. but i think Leno made his first mistake when he agreed to retire looking five years into the future thinking of what it would be like in 2009. when he got to 2009 he realized that he was still on top of the ratings and still having a good time AND still making tons of money...so why quit. that put NBC in the tough spot of having to do something with him...they didnt want to loose a late night ratings power house to another network so they had to experiement to keep him happy due to having a contract with Conan for the Tonight Show spot. Conan of course just landed a dream spot on TV and while it always takes the new tonight show host awhile to work up in the ratings he's not gunna let go of the golden goose. So IMO Jay needs to be the bigger man and leave NBC or take the later spot. Conan has gotten what is rightfully his and shouldnt have to give it up. Elec Report post Posted January 14, 2010 I don't watch a lot of late night comedy, or TV overall, but when I do Jimmy Kimmel is my favorite comedian. He doesn't seem to force it at all. Couldn't care less how NBC arranges their shows...

rmtn Report post Posted January 15, 2010 http://tv.gawker.com/5448615/late-night-wa...by-jimmy-kimmel Watch the 2nd video, Jimmy Kimmel owns Leno on his own show That was hilarious! I like, leno, conan, kimmel and letterman. Leno's personality I like the most but have not seen his shows lately, only car stuff. Conan has very good moments but he takes his guests and his show too seriously and thing he is talking to his guests is mostly boring stuff. Kimmel is great but I dont like his many helper characters whom he has at the show. Letterman I have seen only few times from internet but it has been all great sharp stuff! jeainat Report post Posted January 16, 2010 "O'Brien said among other things, that the porn industry had more style than the NBC. The day after he received an offer to star in a porn movie. That he told his audience yesterday. - I got a letter from Pink Visual, where they offered me a role in one of their films, "said O'Brien, and continued: - In the movie, I should have sex with a delicious woman, but just as we are about to reach climax, I become replaced by Jay Leno". :icon_mrgreen:
