whiteout Report post Posted December 3, 2012 Today I got a lot of work done Continued pre-wiring water pump Cut the rear sheet metal from the engine bay Removed sound deadening from engine bay Test fit engine and test fit wiring (have to make some adjustments) A shot of the work space: Sound deadening material out: LS1 is in
whiteout Report post Posted December 4, 2012 Another day: Finished installing the LS1 harness with the exception of the alternator & battery hook connections; now my arms look like I put them in buckets filled with razors. Installed heater hose to car and routed it Installed coolant vent tube from engine to overflow tank Installed all vacuum lines 3/4 way done with Corvette FPR install (need more hose) Mounted the engine! Now for the issues: Test fitted the intake, absolutely no room for anything on the TB. I have to cut the elbow down significantly. The throttle cable doesn't reach the LS1 throttle body I need to figure out a way to plug the power steering and a/c lines The wiring harness didn't come with a fitting for the a/c compressor. I have no idea how to wire it up.

Lightning Report post Posted December 4, 2012 This is an awesome project, I am sorry I missed this thread till now!!!! Major props for doing this, I love seeing transplants like this come together. That is going to be one MEAN sounding Porsche!!!! The LS1 platform has a ton of potential. Being a former Fbody guy and having 3 different modded LS1 cars in the past, I can tell you that motor gives you a lot in terms of reliability and performance potential for how cheap they are!!! What year was the Camaro you pulled the motor out of? I only ask because although I am sure modding is the LAST thing on your priority list right now, if it is a 2001-2002 car, that car would have the LS6 intake manifold stock. If it is a 98-2000 car, picking up a used LS6 intake manifold for $250-$300 is a cheap mod you can do to pick up an extra 10-15 wheel HP (the LS6 manifold on the later cars looks EXACTLY the same visually (only distinguishable from the part number stamed on the back), but flows a LOT better than the pre 2001 cars). Best of luck on the project! Ill be watching this thread and looking forward to your updates!
LuisGT3 Report post Posted December 4, 2012 I've been following this thread from the start. I know people have done Ls conversions to the earlier Aircooled cars but I've never seen it done on a 996. Is there some sort of conversion manual you are following? Do you know others that have done it to a 996? How much power to the wheels are you expecting to get out if it when it's done? You basically took out one of Porsches worst motors. I look forward to seeing it completed! Nice work.

whiteout Report post Posted December 6, 2012 Old fuel feed line is out, C5 Corvette fuel filter/regulator in, new fuel feed line in and return line connected; aka fuel system complete. More of the coolant system is completed - line from heads to overflow - line from F-log ® to heater box - line from F-log (L) to radiator - line from water pump to radiator - line to Y pipe from F-Log ®
whiteout Report post Posted December 10, 2012 Check these off the list: I hooked up the slave cylinder (total PITA) Continued wiring the water pump Routed a coolant line under the car Cleaned up the intake elbow Today I spent the majority of the day making the trunk clear the intake. I also modified the trunk so that in the spring I can modify the spoiler to take full advantage of the vents on the spoiler. It’s beginning to look like a real car! TheDude Report post Posted December 10, 2012 Man... Changing plugs on that Frankenstein doesn't look to be fun. OTOH, I've always wanted to LS1 a 944 turbo. (Had the best driveline parts/brakes for v8 abuse.) Love the project..

whiteout Report post Posted December 14, 2012 I spent the past few days trying to find a throttle body cable end to fit the Porsche, nobody has the fitting and it's not a reusable part. I went to the hardware store and picked up some wire cable and a crimp end. BAM! $3 throttle body cable that looks like crap. I still have to pick up an end piece for the throttle body, but that should be fairly easy to obtain. Piece that I have to find: Somehow when I was working I managed to cut myself, but I didn't tear the glove. Not really sure how I pulled this off. I trimmed more metal off the trunk, now it clears the intake and MAF, and latches!!! Note the engine I spent days cleaning is now covered with dust from trimming the trunk. Piece that I have to find Shit man I wish you would have said something. Next time you need an odd cable part like that try to find a good cycling shop, they will have a shit load of various cables, housings, feurrels, and those ends with set screws. Progress looks good! Next year you'll be adding a turbo kit
whiteout Report post Posted December 14, 2012 Local bike shops didn't have shit (nobody cycles around here). That was my original thought. But I am looking to bike shops for the end piece with a set screw.
