Been off the radar for a few months, now this:

Tank column crosses from Russia into Ukraine

A column of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer artillery systems and trucks carrying ammunition and fighters has crossed into eastern Ukraine from Russia, the Kiev military said on Friday.

I don't know what Putin gains with this anymore. And why it is about one man and not the country he should speak for.

In other news: Pro-EU parties in Moldova ban Pro-Russian parties from being eligible, just like they did in the Ukraine.

Remember guys, this is all about democracy.

You are uninformed. They banned ONE small party from running in the election, which was headed by a mobster/businessman from the separatist Transdniester region which no one except Russia recognizes. The reason it was banned was because it was being funded by foreign countries, namely Russia. The law in the republic of Moldova specifically forbids political parties from receiving external funding for objective reasons. As far as that region of the world goes I have 0 expectations from western journalists, the overwhelming majority don't even know where this country is, let alone express opinions about it, what they think is irrelevant. If you read that on the news, know that they are grossly misinformed about the events there.

The two major pro Russian parties (a communist party and a socialist one) are alive and well.

The party leader which has now apparently fled to Russia has himself admitted he worked with/for people in Moscow, claiming he was forced to, in order to protect his businesses in Russia. Also a large cache of weapons was found and seized by authorities from a few locations. Said weapons belong to a pro Russian "extremist" group (Russians call them "patriots"). Same kind of group that took over Crimea, I'm guessing.

Ukraine on Sunday shut down one of the six reactors in its most powerful nuclear power plant for the second time in a month due to an apparent electrical malfunction.

The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant said on its website that radiation levels in the area remained normal and that the station's other five reactors continued to operate without any problems.

It said the plant's sixth reactor was "disconnected from the grid by the generator's internal defence mechanism" early Sunday.

A short circuit in the same plant's third reactor contributed to power shortages in Ukraine at the start of the month.

Westinghouse and Ukraine just seem to never work...

Russian designed reactor...not Westinghouse. The article doesn't give me enough information to make an educated guess as to what happened. Regardless I wouldn't be worried about a radiation leak or anything that severe at all.

Just curious, but is that last sentence sarcasm or seriousness?

Dead serious. My uneducated guess is this. They lost offsite power and the unit tripped. I am not familiar with the Russian designs but typically you have 3 sources of power for your power plant (they don't run on the power they generate).

Offsite Power 1

Offsite Power 1

Battery/Diesel Generators

If you lose Offsite Power 1 you should go right to Offsite power 2 with no issues and with no change in plant status. Plant keeps on humming and everyone is happy. Well not happy cause you have a ton of paperwork and the regulator (here in the US that would be the NRC) is going to want to know what happened and why.

If you lose Offsite Power...your plant SCRAMs right away. Additionally your battery backup kicks on to pick up the power demand and your diesel generators or DSGs start up. While the DSGs are starting up you go through a Load Shed which is a sequence in which the plant "turns off" power to certain components...mainly pumps and motors. Then once your DSGs are up and they are synced the breakers close, you come off of battery and you start to load your components again until you have a full load.

All the while the safety system will still work and take full control of the plant to put it into a safe shut down state without any human intervention. (This is what I test as part of my team at work).

Back to the radiation end. Unless the containment structure is breached you should have no possible radiation release EVEN if something drastically went wrong inside of the structure. Your first line of defense is that you keep all radioactive materials inside of your containment structure. No radiated water leaves the the containment structure. You primary loop goes into a steam generator where a heat exchanger heats your secondary loop into steam. The secondary loop leaves containment and goes to your turbine building where the steam spins your turbine/generator. Your tertiary loop cools the secondary loop through a heat exchanger and then the secondary loop returns to the containment building while your tertiary loop returns to your heat sink (sea, lake, river...etc).

Your second line of defense is that you keep your primary loop intact so that no radiated water or contamination leaves the loop. If it is in a closed system everyone stays happy. Then if for some reason the primary loop breaks down you still have the containment structure to keep everything inside a controlled area and from interacting with the environment.

Short circuit =/= radiation release without a lot of other things going wrong on the scale of a Fukushima/TMI/Chernobyl.

Here is the collection point for all issues at plants here in the US. The NRC makes it publicly available.

If this incident had happened here in the US it would be in here and I would be able to tell you a bit more about it. You can see just how much gets reported to the NRC every day and yet how little the public hears about...because quite frankly there isn't much to worry about.

Some good Westinghouse and Ukraine news since that was brought up in here:

http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-ukraine...el-deal-2014-12

Ukraine on Tuesday sealed an additional nuclear fuel supply deal with US giant Westinghouse in order to ease its energy dependence on Russia....A top Energoatom official said this month that Kiev would like to purchase additional Westinghouse nuclear fuel for 13 of its reactors.

US-based Westinghouse currently supplies fuel for only one of Ukraine's 15 operating units -- the third reactor of the South Ukranian Nuclear Power Plant that is located 300 kilometres (185 miles) south of Kiev.

Don't be modest!

I know alot but I also don't know alot. In this industry what you dont know is what gets you in trouble. I do try to speak intelligently on matters I am familiar with and am more than willing to defer or investigate more when it is something I am not. I work with guys that have 40+ years of experience and still learn something everyday so ot makes it easy to stay hungry for knowledge.

All that being said always willing to share or answer questions as they pop up!

On Thursday, while on an official visit to Berlin, the bespectacled young politician was interviewed live by the German TV channel ARD, where he claimed that the USSR had kicked off the Second World War by invading Germany.

"All of us still clearly remember the Soviet invasion of Ukraine and Germany," he said. "We need to avoid it."

"Nobody has the right to rewrite the results of the Second World War," he added. "Russia's President Putin is trying to do exactly this."

Its one thing for it to kinda mess one sentence, but he actually elaborated on it.

Not surprising... Banderite doesn't even reference Poland.

A German politician or a Russian politician claimed that the USSR kicked of WWII? Either way that is all kinds of crazy!
