it looks like that rubber hose is some sort of overflow tubing, coolant or some other temp. related fluid? My guess, can you open the copper tank, and inspect the insides, it might offer some clues as to what the hose is for. You also might be able to trim the hose in length, as long as it remains longer than the bottom of the tank for overflow purposes. Just my .2 cents, correct me if i'm wrong.
