It's like they are Superman coming out of a telephone booth!!!! Especially in a post 911 world they CAN do ANYTHING and get away with it. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like there was no physical violence, he threw a temper tantrum, the wifes friend said she was going to have some big guy come over and "kick his ass". There's a poinding on the door by the cops (who did not identify themselves as police) so the guy bars the door and yells for his wife to call the cops, they bust in, pounce on him and stick a tazer up his ass. Please don't get me wrong, a wife beater is a POS of the highest order and deserves a visit from Bud White (Russell Crowe's Character in LA Confidential), but this guy doesn't seem to fit the bill on this particular occasion.
