Had a great race today

Recommended Posts

Was driving down Rodeo heading towards Sunset when I came upon the matte black SLR with blue wheels many of us have seen before.. He must have seen me coming as he floored it as soon as i got next to him and smoked the tires down the road... We came to the light and was making a left to go down Sunset towards the 405. Those of you who dont know the road might recognize it from the movie Against All Odds where they race the porsche and Ferrari.. We were flying through there.. The first thing I could think of was that in the Gallardo I would left him like he was standing still, but the reality is that on that winding road, he would of toasted the Gallardo.. no way to handle the power on that road while in the 458 I was up his ass and should the road have opened up I could of passed him.. I would of never had the confidence to push the Gallardo that hard..

Also took the 458 on run through the canyons off Mulholland, no joke, I have never been soo impressed with a cars handling before.. This car is rediculous... In Auto Race Mode the car makes you sound like a race driver. I watched it hold 8000rpm around a tight turn, the downshifts are rediculous.. Its an amazing car!

Awesome!

When you say you weren't as confident in the G, was it because of the power or strictly the handling?

Because he can't drive worth of shit unless it is in a straight line and has no feel for what the car does. That is why most people can't go fast in corners lol.

So you're telling me he's not spending hours at SP working on camber/castor/toe in to dial out understeer?

He wouldn't know what that is . And if he could actually drive he wouldn't make the comment about the Gallardo vs 458 handling wise. 458 is a better handling car because of the newer chassis but it isn't that much better that you would notice a difference on Sunset.

All Allan ferrarifag bashing aside, its good to hear someone enjoying his car the way it should be driven.....8000rpm through a turn has got to put a smile on anyones face. Cool brah......

You notice a HUGE difference between the 2 just on Sunset... My Gallardo did not have the track setup option and the difference is HUGE.. My Gallardo was also lowered and would bottom out the suspension.. On Mullholland youd be suprised as to some of the turns and speeds you can hit. Your forgotten fat son used to call it his personal racetrack..

All jokes aside, Im certainly no race driver like my Dadda is, but this car really makes you feel like one.. The sound is amazing..

Ronin is that you? ;)

Allan if you TTd the 458 do you think you would have the best of both worlds? I.E. the straight line performance the GTT gave you coupled with the handling and poise you love from the 458 or do you think the power would overwhelm the finesse?

What would you know about Mulholand lol ? Do you cross the white lines? The lowering of the car is your fault, not the Gallardos. The Gallardo chassis is very competent, maybe not as good as the 458, actually unlikely as good as the 458 but good enough for the street. You lower the 458, you are going to have the same problems. You are altering the suspension geometry and looks aside, unless you modify the suspension too, you are going to affect the handling in a negative way.

I have to agree with the sounds and the transmission, they both rock on the 458

I will answer that for you. TT either car in my opinion ruins the car. Yes, you get more power and it is way faster in a straight line but it also becomes really dangerous. The TT Gallardos are way undertired for the HP even in AWD and to drive one on a circuit without TC really fast is a very difficult feat. I believe it takes the fun factor out of driving the car and turns it into a death trap unless all you want is straight line speed in which case it is unbeatable.

The 458 already seems to have alot of wheelspin in 1st gear.. I personally dont think I would do any sort of mods that would add significant Hp gains on the 458.. Exhaust,ECU and air filters is all I would more than likely do..

We were talking about MY gallardo, so of course the changes I made to it affect it.. Alot has to do with where you live.. In AZ with wide open straight flat roads my GTT would have been insane and I would of certainly driven it more and prob still had it.. Here in L.A. with terrible roads, traffic everywhere, and the only decent roads being canyon or Mulholland close by the GTT was pretty pointless.. I ended up using the Gallardo once or twice a year for the 1199 runs where I could use the speed it could attain on a closed highway, and maybe for a cruise to the beach once every couple months . Essentially with the 458 here I have more fun...with less...

That being said on track, I think I would be faster in the 458 then a new stock Lp570 SuperG..

Thank you, you finally confirmed my suspicion about the way a TT Gallardo behaves around the twisties, majority of the people I was talking to claimed that drivability around the twisties wasn't lost, I found that hard to believe.

If I might add my own $.02...

TTing the G definitely makes it harder to drive in the twisties, but it doesn't ruin the car around corners entirely either, IMHO. For those that treat a throttle pedal like an on/off switch, then yes, it will be a death trap. If you follow the principal of the friction circle and only feed power in as you are feeding out steering input, then you can still manage the beast, and it is quite fun to get the rear end to twitch a bit as the boost comes on.

That said, the TTG is far from an ideal car to drive in the twisties, although some of that has to do with the Gallardo chassis, which in my opinion feels a bit unwieldy and unsophisticated compared to the Ferrari, particularly on a bumpy surface, where the G is just a mess. My Turbo R8 is light years ahead of the Gallardo in terms of chassis balance, and I want to say is even more confidence inspiring than the Ferrari.

Keep in mind too that I am comparing a Spyder to a 458 Coupe, in this case, which doesn't help the argument in favor of the Gallardo.

I view the TTG as more of a straight line highway machine, but it isn't a total loss in the twisties if you respect the power.

What's the ETA on your 458 TT? Would be nice to hear a comparison then as well :)

Another issue is, can these TT cars withstand the rigor of a punishing track day/race?

From what I hear, most cannot.
