car being shipped out of state for service...what to do?

Hi Guys and Gals,

Just had my LP640 picked up to be transported outta state for service (no local dealer). Car is 2009, has about 3400 miles on it. Do I go with what is recommended by maintenance book and replace spark plugs, engine belt, transmission oils/fluid, brake fluids, etc?? My inclination is that since it's already there at dealership, bite the bullet (or wallet) and just get everything done. I've been able to get annual oil change service done locally at local Ferrari dealer, but that (and basic service) is all they are able to do. Other than Egear snap, anything else you can recommend that should be done while at dealer? Appreciate any advice.

I'd complete at least what the owner's manual suggests if it was my car to keep my car in good possible future resale state. Buyers/dealers are always asking for service documents.

With that being said, not a bad idea to ask the service dept to see if some recommended jobs can be postponed to the next service visit since you have no issues and your car has such low mileage. At times, the dealer service dept may even ask for more jobs to be completed than what the owner's manual suggested.

Please keep us updated as I am always interested what the cost is to up keep a Murcielago in comparison to an Aventador. My biggest downfall is, like you, I need to truck my car to out of state to a dealership I'm comfortable with for service and that adds $2000 transport cost to the maintanence equation right off the top.

Where did you ship it to? I never followed the strict maintenace book, 33k miles on my Murci and still running strong. I hope you got a quote before you shipped it out.

On our low mileage Carreras, I have the oil changed and the cars inspected annually by the local dealer. Service recommended by Porsche based on age, I tend to let slide a bit. For instance changing the spark plugs, which was recommended at 4 years, I did at 6 years.

In this case, due to the cost of transportation, I would tend to do all recommended service. That way you may not need to ship the car back for another 4 years. If you pass on some things, you will probably need to ship it back in 2 years. I certainly would not feel good going beyond 6 years on plugs, regardless of mileage.

Nazi, maybe Jefflambo will chime in. If you don't get it done this time you'll for sure get it done next time you send it in.

I would do all the fluids. Engine oil & filter, gear box, both diffs and brake fluid. Its going on 5 years would not hurt to do coolant. I would not do spark plugs yet long ways from 15k never seen one go bad from time. I would have the A/C fresh air filters changed would not hurt to check air cleaners prob. ok .

Tires are 5-6 years old have them checked for any cracking if you do any high speed driving best to replace tires.

They should do a Egear snap shot and LDAS report.

Make sure the test the cooling capacity of the A/C system I have had a few 09 need recharge this summer.

Should be good to go after that.

Also, very important to have the car test driven by your husband when you get it back.! Repeatedly!

Lol, yes that charming bloke should put it through it paces.

EYE DOC says (iin my official role as general lackey): Thanks for the thoughtful reply. She is almost certainly going to follow your advice. Does LADS refer to the pump and actuators that run the egear system?

Like Andy said it would make sense to do as much as possible while it is at the dealer since you already paid to ship it there and back.

As for letting the hubby drive it...I am staying out of that one. :eusa_dance:

Snap shot is done with LARA and is for the EGEAR system LDAS is the engine control system.

next time just take it to Makes and Models in layton. They are working on becoming lambo certified, but they are an audi authorized service center and have the ability to do almost all that needs to be done on the Lambo. they are constantly working on R8's and know their stuff when it comes to mid engine cars.

As well, they are the greatest technician out there and wonderful to work with!

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions, especially Jeff. I haven't heard from dealer yet as to what they think needs to be done but at least now, I have more information than before because of all of you :)

Anxiously and with great trepidation awaiting the call from service manager with what they think needs to be done.

I'm in the same boat as you. Cars on the truck headed to Newport Beach, I know Jeff will walk me through what is wrong and what he thinks should be done, but still nerve racking. At least I know it's going to one of the few true lambo specialists and will be sorted out. Again, tough not knowing though what the final numbers will be.... shipping alone was hefty so want to make sure it gets what it needs. Plus want to enjoy next summer.

Where in Canada is your car coming from? How did you find a shipper? Any problems with bringing it across the border? We promise not to whine any more about no Lambo dealer!

Sooooo, I get the call from the service manager from the dealer where car was shipped to today. I was with a patient and missed the call but when I saw the caller ID, I actually sat down took a few deep, calming breaths before I returned the call.

Turns out, car inspection showed absolutely NO ISSUES with the car (praise the lord!). Remaining clutch life was good, zero codes thrown, etc. He said that the only thing he would recommend doing at this time was changing all fluids, the filters and that's it. He complemented me on having the cleanest car he'd seen on inspection in a long time :)

I was really impressed because he paid attention to my concerns about having it stored inside and with cover on, remembering to lower front end when parked, etc. and without me asking, reminded me that he had personally checked to make sure those things were done on a nightly basis.

Also he has arranged to have it shipped back in single car transport non stop from Vegas to Salt Lake. Cannot state enough how impressed I am with Brett at Lambo Las Vegas--class act all the way, especially when you consider that the car was purchased from another dealer.

Before I purchased the car, I spent considerable time contemplating what I was getting myself into--thank God the car has been trouble free from the time I took delivery.

EyeDoc - congrats on a good report card and being able to relax knowing all is well. I'm glad you had a positive experience! Now for the REAL question: does hubby get to drive it???

I recently had the seat in my Cayman R re-positioned (I was too low in the car and my HANS device was getting stuck in the seat when I compressed in my seat under heavy braking in certain circumstances). The dealer designed some shims and had them custom made at a machine shop. The seat is now perfect for me - but hubby is very uncomfortable and no longer wants to drive the car. He could drive it if he had to - but has no desire to get behind the wheel as it's a tight squeeze and puts him in a position he doesn't like.

I'm not saying you should have your Murci seat custom shimmed just for you. Not sayin that at all :icon_mrgreen:
