Finally got to play around with the M5

Next month will be a year of ownership of my M5. I've loved the car so much since I took over ownership, but I haven't really been able to open it up much (other than in a straight line), since the race track was shut down here on Oahu. Well, a friend of mine took me down to a back road where all of the bikers here go to have fun. Needless to say, the car didn't reach anywhere near its potential, but it was a blast nonetheless. The car is absolutely glued to the road, and the tire screeching was because I drive with traction control off all the time. I didn't do anything too crazy or ridiculous. I pretty much stayed in low RPM's the whole time and didn't reach anywhere over 6500, (revs to 8250), but the noise is absolutely astonishing to listen to in person. There are 7 gears, so I'm constantly changing and getting used to it in a curvy area. The car has been pretty reliable, considering it was like new when I took over. 39K miles when purchased, and service every 300 miles by the last owner. I've put about 6K miles on it driving around on the weekends and what not, and it's still amazing that a car this fast can have so much room and be so practical. Sorry in advance, it's a bit shaky, but I though I'd share. Enjoy!

Your other left!

In for the Koenig comments

Haha, thanks! :lol2: I'm horrible with directions. :google_dk:

Can't wait for him to bless us with his greatness. :icon_anal:

Actually, I'm a big fan of the M5. Its always been the best high performance sedan on the market. It blends the best balance between luxury sedan and near sport car. The original E28 M5 is absolutely one of the best cars built in the 80's, the euro specs are close to 300hp. E34 M5 was another great car. The entire line has been impressive.

I only slam Ferrari and American cars.

Nice video, that will probably never get old. The NA V10 in the M5 and M6 are one of my favorite engines from BMW. I think I need to buy a V10 M5 or M6 someday, no matter how old they are when that day comes. Thanks for sharing your video!

The absolute best car I've ever owned. :D Pick up a quality one now that's been taken care of, while you can!

Having driven DoctaM3's 20606 M6 in anger on a multiday roadtrip I can tell you that you need to put the car in M mode and not let off of the gas until it redlines. Come back to me after you do that. ;)

Haha. It may not look like it, but those turns were SHARP!

Here's a picture of me and two of my friends before we did that road a few weeks ago. It was pretty fun!

Nothing like a high revving v10. I still miss mine.

After changing my rod bearings and learning so much about this car for the last three weeks, I don't believe I'll be getting rid of it any time soon!

The rod bearings in these engines have a lubrication and clearance issue with the crankshaft. A few people I know are working on addressing the issue. I caught it just before catastrophie. A few of the bearings practically fell out when I removed the rod caps.

Lately I find it easy to slam BMWs....easier to slam than Ferrari and American cars.

I love these damn cars lol

I constantly toy around with picking up an E60 or E39. Then i read more and decide against it :lol2:

Do it! Let me know if you're ever going to pick one up. :) I'll tell you what to look for (although you probably know more than me about cars in general). This car is so ridiculous in every way for a sedan! It reaches 170mph so easily and with room to spare.

Absolutely loved mine!

NA V!0 is the way to go!!!

I had an E46 M3, then E63 M6 with Supersprint X pipes and Eisenmann Race exhaust......and then had kids so moved to the E60 M5, with Eisenmann Race exhaust.....that sound was just orchestral beauty!

Such a great car to drive, I only got rid of it as it was accumulating miles and was worried about the SMG pump failure

Well, good news if you ever decide to get one again. It wasn't the pumps failing on these cars, it was the $300 motor that you can replace yourself! :)

I really want the Eisenmann though.

The e90 M3's have the same issue. My motor blew at 35,000 miles. The e90 V8 is basically a cut down e60 v10.

That is correct! the S65 in the M3 is a 4.0 liter and the S85 in the M5 is a 5.0 liter.

My friend Jim just worked with someone to create oversized bearings that will solve this issue in the S65 (33) and S85 (M5/M6). The only other alternative is to ground down the crankshaft which he is attempting soon.

That exhaust is amazing. Worth it!

I'll definitely reach out should I pull the trigger. My main tactic was avoid the SMG and go with the six-speed. That leaves the VANOS and rod bearing issues if memory serves me correctly.

The Meistercraft full exhaust system sound is one of the best sounding I've ever heard. I'd do that, and in the winter pull the interior, dynamat the interior to the moon and back to avoid the drone. Maybe some wheels, a new coil over to refresh the suspension, and I'm sure a few other things to get it back to better than stock.

Nah, I don't know to terribly much. A few things, sure, but only when I need to know them. :lol2:

Let me know. :) I have a lot of contacts, even with some engineers at the "M" division in Germany if there's anything you want to know.

The Meisterschaft is awesome! I recommend the Eisenmann though, but won't tell you how to customize your car. The SMG isn't really that big an issue with these cars and dealerships often rape people when they can with their "diagnosis" on whatever is wrong when you bring the car in. These cars are surprisingly DIY with a basic tool set. The only issue I see with the manual is that it was an E39 Transmission they added to the E60 and only for the NA market. The S85 was actually designed around the SMG, so it just feels weird when it's a manual.

Rod bearings should be good every 50K miles and the VANOS is actually only a problem on the 05-07 cars. The 2008 like mine and up do not have the issue with the VANOS pump, and even that is surprisingly easy to replace and set backlash for. The issue with the VANOS pump was improper backlash set from factory as well as the thin gear and teeth, but some people upgraded their pump.

Of course being this car is a modern sports car, you'll need a $100 laptop and another $100 on a cable and some extra for software but on top of that everything is really reliable for what you're getting in the package.

As for how loud the exhaust is, there's really not a drone that I've noticed at lower RPM and (not sure if you're judging that by someone else's car). These cars rev really high but do surprisingly well at low rpm and are really quiet under 3500. I know a few suspension mods you can do as well if you want stiffer steering. These cars handle ferociously on tight turns, even with stock suspension.

Of course I know tons of places to get parts if you ever need any. Working on this car has definitely prepared me for working on a Lambo, I'd say (with the exception of parts prices). I just need to get an engine rebuild under my list of things I've done in cars and then I'll be pretty confident. What was that quote you said a Ferrari mechanic once told you? I remember reading in another thread.

Cheers! :icon_super:

Eisenmann! That was the other exhaust I liked!

Good to know on the 08+ for the VANOS as well.

I knew the car was designed around the SMG, what I had heard or compiled was that due to being F1 related they rushed and ended up not putting out the best. Has the aftermarket stepped in or is it just regular DIY that can take care of it?

I had a free few minutes earlier today and was looking at eBay motors again and saw a couple SMG cars at a decent price. As you tell me more, I get more persuaded. :lol2:

I may pull the trigger this winter on one and get it up to speed while there is snow on the ground, but not 100% yet. I just picked up a new Silverado, so now I need a three-season vehicle ;)

I'll definitely keep you in mind, and appreciate the offers. I'd be happy to offer whatever connections I can muster should you need something as well.
