I have a retail business and from my experience when a customer bounces a check for 200 bucks or so it can get expensive quickly to try and sue em for the recovery. Also there is Court fees and you have to pay a process server to serve the papers to them. I am pretty sure your grandfather was dealing with amounts that was in the thousands which makes sense to pursue it. I just have a rule now where if I don't know the client I take a debit card. It also saves me the trip to make the deposit.

Small claims is quick and simple and is easier for anyone to file paperwork. No lawyers involved so less exspense. If you wanted to pursue more it would mean filing a civil case that may require the assitance of an attorney and that doesn't come cheap. Depending on the amount that is being pursued your most likely better off leaving money on that table.

certified letters don't work. They know whats coming so they will simply refuse it. Just send it thru regular mail and start the small claims process. Some pay when they get served papers for court and some just don't show up to court and you have a judgement that you can turn over to a collection agency.

Not that it would matter I am pretty sure someone copied and save the page already and the prosecuter will probably get a hold of it somehow.

Make sure you have pictures to prove your case! I don't think someone can just put a lien on your property until they have a judgement but someone on the forum that is a attorney may be better suited to answer that part.
