Apparently, the fertilizer plant was on fire with firefighters on site when it blew.

 

Nursing home right across the street is totally fucked.

 

Location is West, Texas. Just north of Waco.

 

To early for complete injury and casualty count.

Crazy! My wife did her student teaching atvWest middle school just down the street. One of my best friends is an E.R. Doc at one if the hospitals in Waco. April, what the heck is going on?!

Details

No details on the cause, however no suspicious motives have been considered. This is seemly an unfortunate accident.

West is being evacuated as of 12:00am (Local time)

75-100 buildings damaged and leveled due to the explosion.

A second tank is under threat from exploding with 200,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia (Thanks to darthn3ss and cjbest).

The triage center has been moved inside after danger from poisonous gases and further explosions.

A press conference held by D.L. Wilson (Department of Public Safety) in West Texas reports West requires no more help. 'Tremendous injuries with confirmed fatalities'.

An Apartment building with 50 apartments is now 'just skeleton standing there' and the nursing home ' 133 has been evacuated with unknown injuries'

A blood drive is being held tomorrow morning at 9:00 am - Look to your local medical centers for more information.

A no fly zone of 3 miles around the plant has been enforced by the FAA.

The plant is smoldering with fumes around.

Homes have been damaged. Reports indicate smashed windows, collapsed walls and ceilings.

Reports of feeling the shock wave from 50 miles away.

Some stations reporting 200 injured, 50-70 dead.

Hill Crest hospital has seen over 100 victims, lesser injuries luckily.

The explosion created a 2.1 event according to the USGS at 8:50pm

Seismometer from Amarillo captured the impact of the fertilizer plant explosion in West, TX 400 mi away

EPA paperwork stated that there were 54,000 lbs of anhydrous ammonia on hand and no risk of explosion

The FAA has put a no-fly zone into effect 3 miles around West and below 3,000 feet

6-7 fire fighters cannot be accounted for and are assumed dead

1 police officer died in the blast

Director of West EMS believes there are 60-70 dead

75-100 homes and businesses completely destroyed

Frisco FD called in from over 100 miles away

West has a population of 2,847, there are hundreds that were injured in the blast.

Apr 16, 1947 581 people were killed in a fertilizer explosion in Texas City

An information hotline was set up for concerned friends and relatives at 254-202-1100

Explosion occurred at 7:50 pm local time

"Earthquakes" reported in south Arlington, over 60 miles away

66 admitted to Hillcrest Hospital with 12 being critical

Providence Hospital in Waco has received 22 patients

9 helicopters landed on the scene to evacuate injured

West Mayor reports that buildings within 5 blocks suffered major damage

8 blocks have been evacuated due to toxic fumes, the entire town has been asked to leave

The fire can be smelled as far as west Fort Worth - over 70 miles away

Parkland Hospital in Dallas received 2 patients, 1 by air and 1 by ambulance

133 residents of a nearby nursing home had to be evacuated

Hillsboro Hospital has received 29 patients and is expecting another bus

Frisco FD has sent an ambulance bus which can transport and treat 20 patients at once

Oncor is reporting more than 1,100 people are without power

Apartment complex with 50 units was completely destroyed

Hillcrest Hospital has asked 250-300 additional personnel to come in

Geeze, if 2,000 lbs of ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) was used in the Oklahoma City bombing, this thing must have been like a nuke.
