OK, heading over to Europe soon. How do I text an Italian cell phone number? For texting, do I just use +39 then the number? For calling, I use the 011 39 then the number, correct?

I have AT&T Wireless, I plan to purchase one month of the International plan, but is there an iPhone app where I text an Italian cell phone for free?

What do you guys do when you need to text or call an European phone number? What are some DOs and DON'Ts?

Anything you recommend, I be glad to look into.

Thanks in advance.

One option you have is to get both parties on an app like Whatsapp. Then if you have wifi you can message and even call for free.

Sounds like you want to keep your number to be reached at, if that's not the case while you travel - I buy a local sim card and use it with my unlocked iphone. In spain the service was $10 refill and I could talk for a month, and buy data at like $5/500mb internet.

When you add a contact, get watsapp and see if they are there, then you can call them/text them for free over wifi as whatthehellwashisnamebeforethisone said.

I think that's right yeah. you'll figure this out very quickly once you're there.

Thank for all replies!

I see that we can get in the same app then in wifi areas, communication would be free.

Luckily, I just learned that the person I need in contact with uses Facebook Messenger! So as long as I get wifi, we can communicate.

I've also heard buying an European SIM to save money, but I do like to keep my US phone so other can reach me as well.

With AT&T international "Passport Silver" plan, will I get charged for receiving a text from an Italian phone number here in the US and while I'm in Europe?

Spends $50k on carbon fiber for his car, wants to save $5 on his phone bill!

Love it :lol2:

Use whatsapp, best thing while you travel overseas, I use it all the time, I form groups and send photos and videos on the spot to my friends and family, see if your service provider will sell you a wifi plan which you can use overseas, that's the most cost convenient way to communicate, have fun in Europe! Get the att international plan for a month. You get reduced rates on data, calls and text.

Having to buy and activate a SIM card in foreign language may not be easy.

I just got back from 10 days in Italy last night. We got the AT&T passport plan. Here is what you do. Keep your cellular data roaming on when you get there. Turn wifi assist off (if you upgraded to the new iOS 9). Individually turn all your apps off in the cellular data menu so they won't be eating data in the background. If you want to use say google map app or safari turn it on use what you need and turn it back off. Also hit reset statistics at the bottom so you can keep track of the data you use.

Added tip, download here now maps app and the specific country you are going to. It will give you location and GPS as well as directions off of GPS without using data.

Hoping since you are asking about an Italian number you are doing at least Lamborghini. We were there and Pagani. Great experience!

I use WhatsApp and Google Hangouts. I also have a Google Fi account so I can text/receive texts from any number worldwide for free.

ive been to germany london budapest pruage germany, austria, italy, monaco, france, japan, shang-hi, macau, toyko, hyoto, hiroshima manila in the past 12 months, spent almost 6 months on those trips, i dont recall my largest bill-i will find out tomorrow for sure but maybe$120/mo. I'm telemarketer(retired), believe me i buys up the hours on the phone

T-Mobile all the free data you can stand for free its 3G(hence the caution-stand)-great for photo sharing, bad for porn(unless you like still photo over video) in every place i just mentioned, great mobile reception 80% of the time. My phone is still in one piece so that speaks to that.

all calls 20cents USD so $12.00/hr for longer calls,

my bills used to be $4000/mo in germany on Verizon, with ZERO data, they want $21.63/meg-so txting/posting a pic is just crazy.

im leaving for a couple day to asia same thing T-Mobile for a month or 2 or 3.

travelling is my new thing now.

I travel more than most and this one i have down cold. FWIW i waso carry a Verizon phone with me in case i get into a bad signal area. which i have only used in LA, never off shore.

T Mobile has 142 countries with deals cut so your mobile works there just fine, i've spend hundreds of thousand dollars on mobile phone time over the past 20 years travelling the globe, this is the greatest plan out there if your travelling.

sorry my spelling blows as usual, but the content of my post is spot on,

any questions ask me or read the plans T Mobile had and no im not a stock holder(of any company-unless i own the biz)

happy to help

Get whatsapp or viber, if you dont have at least one of those, you are living in the stone age!

great advice, a couple years ago most of my friends in europe were on Viber, history now they use whatsapp, the ladder is perhaps a bit better, however with free data on Tmobile i perfer it over the "apps".

in anycase the $4000/mo phone bills are history now, yay!!

world travelers always have T-Mobile..no brainer

free 3G and free text..and 20 cents per minute for any local or international calls.

once in a while the 3G is awful-Prague. However overall the couple instances its slow is ok, voice is great damn near anywhere, infact its weaker in america than most countries i'v been in with it around 20.
