I went on the Explorer of the Seas 12 yrs ago on its maiden voyage. That was the last cruise I went on and I loved it. Im hoping to start doing a few of these a year to rest from the other vacations my wife drags me on.

Could someone enlighten me on the positives of one of these trips? Genuinely curious.

Its like a floating las vegas, with a few pit stops and excellent service.

Admittly, I'm on my phone and haven't done any researching - is this a separate stratosphere when compared to the carnival stuff I always see advertised? How much does a 4 or 7 day trip run?

We went on the Oasis a couple of years ago. We cruise quite often because it's easy with kids. We never hear "I'm bored blah blah". They always make friends and it makes it easy on us.

Allan, it's HUGE. The specialty resturaunts are smaller than the other ships, as are most of the pools etc. Stay away from the main dining rooms, they're sooooo loud. Make sure you use your concierge service to reserve EVERYTHING as it all gets sold out quickly. You especially want him to get you space at the pool decks and the shows. The outdoor theater is really cool and you have to see a show there, it's like no other ship experience you'll have. Also, try the zipline. you get a pretty cool view of the ship from it.

Main St. at night is a zoo, that's when you'll realize how big the ship is and how many people are on board. Disembarkation and embarkation in ports will also remind you how big the ship is. Again, use the concierge for shore excursions and you get VIP escort off the ship, it will save you TONS of time, no lines etc.

Good luck and bon voyage

Thanks for the info! I know we already have a bunch of stuff reserved, paid extra for something with the meals and stuff.

If you paid extra for meals then you reserved specialty resturaunts. Smart move. Food is so much better and no crying whiny ass kids. They have a great wine list as well. Portofino is the better of the bunch. Chops is a steak place and you can order a steak if you're in Portofino ( they don't tell you that but you can)

And ready........ they have a specialty cupcake shop. There's 40 extra lbs right there

Allan, couple of questions:

What kind of room do you have?

What are your ports of call? We've done just about every excursion and I can tell you which we liked and which to avoid.

I was on this ship about a year ago. It's really something else...

Had a great time. LOVED Chops steak house...If I were you, I'd go there a couple times. Portofino was good, too.

As Jpegs said, use your concierge for EVERYTHING.

Comedy show was good, ice skating show was cool. Diving show was good. Definitely go to "The Quest" - that was fun.

Most of the other shows stink...Broadway style is not my thing, though.

Did some port of call stuff...Most of the excursions are lame....I had a better time just doing my own thing...

On one cruise we stopped at St Marrten, and went to Sunset beach - Had a great time watching planes come in, and getting blasted when they takeoff -

On another cruise stopped in San Juan, and just did our own thing around town....

Oh, and stay away from blackjack...I swear they used a 'funny' deck. :(

I have been on Navigator and Liberty of the Seas.

Great time. Yes specialty restaurants are a must. Where are the stops? I can give you some info on things to do (if I have

been to them) based on where the ports of call are.

thats so crazy. i just booked for christmas time.

i cant freaking wait. what room did you get?

We've been on that ship twice. Very nice! Had a room overlooking mainstreet the first time. Went all out for the balcony the second time around. Great "activities" out on the balcony made it worth the extra coin.

They are pretty strict about outside alcohol. We have turned the smuggling of boos onto the ship into a game.

The cruise industry has a problem pulling in people who have never gone on one before, apparantly over 75% of all passengers on any ship are return patrons.

That high repeat-customer figure is not a surprise to me, because once you go cruising it changes your expectations of what a "vacation" really is...

It's such a wonderfully lazy, never-have-to-do-shit experience, combined with well thoughtout excursions and adventure packages that are easy to enjoy.

We're loyal to Celebrity and have had nothing but good experiences with them, but honestly all of the major lines (with the exception of the 'trailer trash of the seas' Carnival) provide an excellent experience for the most part.

As others have said, never eat in the main dining room as the food there pales compared to the specialty restaurants, and surprisingly the private steakhouses on board most of the newer ships really do use aged prime beef that once prepared tastes as good as a similar cut at Mastros/Ruth's Chris/etc.

The shows are a personal taste as Mike just mentioned, but there's a lot to do on board to keep you occupied, particularly on that ship.

I look forward to seeing your review, because honestly we've stayed away from Oasis and its similarly-sized sister ship despite being curious about that 'experience'.

Humanity is the enemy on these trips, you do everything in your power to avoid the masses and their stupidity, and when the Oasis docked next to us in St. Thomas an absolute endless tidal wave of people poured out of that ship almost immediately...it was shocking, to the point where where my wife and I said "no way" regarding a possible trip on one.

But based on what the rest of you are saying maybe it's worth a second look, I will wait for Allan's official "Asshole" review before booking however... :icon_mrgreen:

Some of you may have seen this on my facebook status today, I thought it was applicable to Talk like a pirate day but also now I know Allan is going on a cruise I think he has a benchmark of standards to uphold.

Allan, make it so.

A drunken woman stole a passenger ferry on the River Dart and shouted 'I'm Jack Sparrow' and 'I'm a pirate' as she drifted away from police on the shore, a court has been told. Alison Whelan, 51, had been on a two-day bender drinking Lambrini and eating hallucinogenic plants when she sought late-night shelter with a companion on the Dart Princess Passenger Ferry. When police arrived to speak to her she unmoored the 45ft vessel from the Kingswear pontoon and set off up the river. Magistrates didn't see the funny side of her hour-long drunken escapade - which left several boats damaged and involved 30 members of the emergency services landing the tax payer with a hefty bill - as Whelan was sent to jail' - The Herald Express.

That is probably the one bad thing about the big ships...Not just alot of people...Alot of RUDE Europeans (Yes, Slowpoke, I'm looking at you).

I don't know if its the language barrier, or they are just fcuking assholes.

Even with ~5000+ people on the ship, I never really felt it was 'crowded'....Although sometimes late evening Main St was a mess.

We had a Balcony Grand Suite, and it was fine. And, yes...As Gary states...Balcony 'activities' are great! Make sure you stay as high on the ship as possible!

Also I made a mistake... we are going on the Allure, I thought it was the Oasis.. I guess they are the same ships? Pit stops are Bahamas, St Thomas, and St Martin..

Same sized ships. I don't think there is a difference between them besides the name.

Ugh...11 in laws....The ship isn't that big.

I google'd prices for Oasis and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I'm not a huge fan of being on a boat without a visible shore though lol. Didn't we all talk about doing an LP cruise sometime in the past? Sounds like it could be a good idea

A few years back my wife and I spent a week on the Freedom of the Seas, which I guess is very similar to the Oasis. It was very impressive although I must admit I am not a huge fan of cruises. The part I liked the least about it was how closely they packed the chairs together at the pool. I need my space and felt a little claustrophobic.

The best part was the excursions. We stopped at St. Martin, St. Thomas, and San Juan. At St. Martin we rode around in these little inflatable boats and went snorkeling off of a nude beach. Not a bad way to spend a day.

I think once my kids get a bit older it might make sense to go on a cruise again.
