I'll place a large sum of money on the assertion that the party ran her like a fcuking dog for three times normal amount of time that people occupy a table, they also ordered water with lemon for the whole table as a no charge beverage and then, after all that, they stiffed her on the tip. Ask me how I know, oh yeah, because I worked in the restaurant biz for over 10 years as a server and a bartender and a manager. I truly am of the opinion that everyone should be required to work as a member of a wait staff for a period of time. One of the most thankless and fruitless jobs around. I will certainly uphold that there are some shitty people in the food service industry, just like the car industry, but I will say that as a whole the majority of the patrons to an establishment like Applebee's likely fit the mold of this unpolished turd that stiffed the server after a night filled with endless water runs, returned food (that was as ordered, just a complaint to get a free meal) and endless complaints. Again, years of experience here. I could be wrong, but I am certain I am not.

As I recall the gratuity was always included.... And the service always sucked ass.

A game to play in Paris: out rude your server. Just impossible.

I miss tipping in Europe. Just round up - because they are paid a normal wage.

 

I always tip 10-20% on top of "rounding up" if I am satisfied.. I feel sorry for the cute waitresses

There is a wage paid in the US to servers that is below minimum wage with the thought that their money is made up by tips. It's farily standard to add an auto tip for parties above 6 people. This prevents the person for working on a table that requires more work and getting stiffed on the tip. It's not a bad thing IMO.

 

What does annoy me is the tip spot these days on almost all places in the US. Starbucks, The carry out pizza joint, etc.

It's widely agreed that tipping should be optional and based on the service you receive. I thought this was a good article on automatic tipping and the tipping psychology in general.

When I went to Rio de Janeiro in 2010, I had no idea about the tipping. I went with my girlfriend and her family (who are Brazilian) and they informed me that it is not customary in Brazil. It felt weird and I still found myself tipping for good service at restaurants and bars, which I felt was deserved. Those servers loved me, the gringo tipping for drinks and meals. I'm smart enough to know those servers (and everyone there) are obviously aware that Americans like to tip, which most likely affected my level of service.

We have cheap asses like the pastor here who like to go to restaurants with 20 people, bark orders at the waiters and make them work their tail off slaving away on their group for 2 hours,then leave them no tip. So if you have a party of 6 or more, the tip is included in the bill so you cant shaft the waiter. Waiters here work for tips and have almost no salary.

Well it's an issue of reporting. Probably not as big a deal these days as it was in the past because in most places you can leave the tip on the credit card. The whole thing came about because servers were getting cash tips and not reporting the income so as to avoid tax.

Im sure many servers prefer to get the tips instead of the wage.....not all servers are dealing with bullshit churches serving meals in denny's or wherever the fcuk this is.

I have patients that are pastors and they really like to let you know this. It seems like there is some sort of entitlement that they should not have to pay to go to the doctor.

Not only is the comment on the receipt asinine, mathematically is so far out of whack it's stupid. She gives god 10% "of her income" the waitress gets 18% "of a $36 bill" big fcuking difference.
