I read this the other day too. Seemed like it was mostly young kids. If there were anyone here that were a part of this, I bet their lawyers have recommended they don't say a word.

After reading that article, it paints a different picture than your cliff notes. What is the moral to this story, quit using a fcuking GoPro and recording your driving habits. Honestly, the hubris of the recordings is amazing. The whole "down in Mexico" shit is going to put some people behind bars eventually.

There is a meme floating around, it goes something like "I am glad I grew up in the 70's, 80's, 90's when cell phones and cameras werent around so there is no record of all the stupid shit I did." We all do some stupid shit, but recording it for posterity is going full retard. Now, there is video evidence that puts these guys into a really bad spot, all because someone wanted to be a baller on YouTube or Instagram.

One other thing, I am not a fan of the police state. Them coming in heavy handed with a warrant and grabbing cars, phones, laptops, and cameras is a little Orwellian.

I agree about recording everything, but in some cases it can help. In CO I have had friends on bikes intentionally swerved at, run off the road, etc... all because some people do not enjoy motorcycles riding the mountain roads. A friend used his GoPro to dispute a ticket in court. A cop claimed to see my friend cross a double yellow line to pass a car on his sport bike. The photos captured from the video proved that not only did my friend complete the pass in a legal passing area before the double yellow lines began, but also showed the pass was complete before the cop car even came into viewing proving the cop couldn't even see the pass meaning he lied about what he saw (I know, we are all shocked). This would be the 1/10 times that a video is helpful, the other 9 times it would just show stupid behavior.

The fact that the police could take things this far and so far have not had to explain or answer to anyone for months is frightening. Hopefully there will be follow up to the story after the court date to hear if this is resolved.

What are California's civil forfeiture laws? Can they keep the cars like you hear about some police departments keeping cash if they have a suspicion that it has been used in a crime?

I have seen this story posted on different forums.... my first thought is that the story is very vague, and there has to be more to the story. The amount of time that passed, most police departments do not commit that amount of time and resources to traffic violations, with a lot of people involved that means a lot of legal work on their end. My guess, either someone was injured, property damaged, or they were organizing some sort of illegal activity.

It is pretty vague and very, very fishy. Yeah the group is mostly kids from what I am told. A falsely accused group on a drive is what got me on LP in the first place.

I started doing stupid shit about right before camera phones got mainstream. And a few years before Facebook, actually one year younger than Zuckerberg. We never thought to record anything, just have fun. Now it seems everyone records everything stupid. I have done the same with Snap Chat, but nothing I record is illegal. But the street racing videos are still pretty fun to watch. 1320Video got popular by this, and I loved their videos.
