LOL at the first comment: "No worries. DiBlassio will have NY looking like this again in no time at all."

If anyone wants to see some color pictures of NYC in the 1950s, check out the movie "How to Marry a Millionaire" from 1953. It is on Netflix right now, but it is a color film and it has some beautiful cinematography of NYC circa 1953.

It is the doom of men, that they forget.

A lot of fires... saw a comment that landlords just couldn't operate due to rent laws, and arson was rampant. Would be cool to hear stories if anyone has some of living there at that time.

That's the NYC that I grew up in!

Me to and the place I left 37 years ago, now when I complain about SoCal I just think back from where I came.

Anyone know what building that is in the picture of the interior of the classical building? Like it looks like how a church might appear post apocalypse or something.

I remember the subways having a completely different feel than they do now, and the city being dirtier and more dangerous (this was the late '80s to early '90s).

One thing I do like from these photos are a few of the remnants that are no longer with us (and I'm not just talking about the Towers). Of note there are the pics of the now demolished elevated west side highway (the first pic, the pic with the missing section of roadway overlooking the white truck, and then a pic of another abandoned car on elevated roadway).

The elevated subway with the Queens Boulevard street sign was demolished in 1990.

Notice how much more appropriate the throwback NY license plates look in these photos than on cars today!

Seeing these pictures puts me in the mood for a marathon of Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, French Connection, and Manhattan.

Classic films which could only have been made back in the day.

ME TOO! Remember when Hell's Kitchen was a place you never went, and Time's Sq you could watch a live sex show, get arrested, released and join the army all within 200ft!

My dad came back from Vietnam, took a look around and said "fcuk this" and became a cop when they were horribly corrupt, the black panthers were shooting cops, and the lunatics had control of the asylum. He could have used the fcuking berlin wall to hang all his commendations.

I used to go to PBA meetings as a kid and built forts and wondered why some kids never came back. It took years for me to realize a lot of those kids grew up without dads.
