I.should clarify "opportunity" being a year+ to dedicate to training, practice climbs on some other huge mountains. Plus I figure all said and done it would take $50k to do Everest, and that's not counting the $$$ to pay the bills while you're training.

I have no clue how people do it while maintaining careers, families, and so forth. It would have to be pretty all consuming.

On a safer front, anyone up for a trip to the Palm Springs tram? Riding that is a fcuk ton easier. :icon_mrgreen:

Full list of Everest fatalities. One out of ten people that make it to the summit don't make it back down. No way in hell I would ever feel the need to attempt that. Might as well play a round of Russian Roulette. If you look at the causes of death there is no way any amount of prep increases your odds by much.

There is a lot of SCUBA diving I'd like to do and with a rebreather as well someday (which requires special training), and also dive really deep with a submersible like James Cameron did in the Mariana Trench. But that is much more comfortable and has the element of exploration.

The same reason people want to drive a car 200, 300, 400 mph, go to the moon, backflip a dirtbike off the grand canyon, or ride a balloon to 100k ft altitude and jump off.

The thrill, pushing the limits, and in this case to see a view from the highest point on earth.

I completely get why people do it, knowing there is a very real, measurable chance you could get hurt in an area where a sprained ankle means your going to freeze to death. Hell given the opportunity I'd probably give it a go.

What cars go 400 mph? Are those the drag racers with the jet engines in them? Also, how does a sprained ankle mean freezing to death?

Land speed racers go faster than that.

On that mountain there is very little rescue assistance as people can barely deal with themselves. If you aren't Mobil unassisted past he final camp, there is a huge chance you're dead on the mountain.

Read the link, they said other hikers stop to see how the injured people are doing, and essentially say bye, leaving them to die alone on the mountain.

Damn...

What a career. It's sad that he has to retire but he's making a good decision for his health and family and that is very commendable.
