soup Report post Posted November 7, 2011 What the fcuk, which spider is the 2nd picture?!?!?! And the first one has been mentioned here right, white tail spider? Nature still amazes me, why do little creatures like spiders or lizards or frogs have to be so posisonous they can easily kill hundreds of us people. edit: Googling 'spider eats bird' gets the same result
pockmark Report post Posted November 7, 2011 That orb weaver is similar to the ones I see by the beach in the mangroves. Even though they don't attach humans and are not really poisonous, they always freak me out because they are huge. They are about the size of my hand for the larger ones. Article about the golden orb weaver in 2nd pic here, not dangerous to humans. 1st pic is a huntsman and is not dangerous to humans either. Kerplop Report post Posted November 8, 2011 ^^^ that is a fcuking rad spider! That thing is huge! Beats keeping tarantulas. Visit to pet store: Guy: "Yeah I'm here for a few parakeets." Store keeper: "Wait... didn't you get some a few weeks ago?" Guy: "Yep." Store keeper: "Where did the other 2 go?" Guy: "My pet ate them." Store keeper: "WHAT? What eats parakeets?" Guy: "Golden Orb spider." Store keeper: "That's funny, a bird eating spider, haha. Suuuure." Guy: "Thanks I'll take those parakeets now...." Kerplop Report post Posted November 8, 2011 There is something wrong with a few of you on here. I hate this thread. To some of us they are cute and fuzzy and cuddly! Awwwwww. I don't like to cause my pets stress and the like so I generally observe, but I think it's within sheer curiosity of all owners at some point to have the interest to handle them. Granted I don't do it really anymore because it is stressful to them. Tarantulas seem to be pretty lax. Scorpions can be, but some of those assholes can draw blood if they pinch. I never handled any of my oddball scorpions. Emperors are very lax, laid back. Rosehair tarantulas are too, generally not a pain in the ass. I think it depends on the keeper and their experience and comfort level. Realistically, as long as the specimen isn't super aggressive, they don't generally just lash out and bite, they'll go near warmth, crawl, explore and look for a comfortable place to go. (old picture) preggo Didn't like this one. She was super aggressive. Lol. Very entertaining to watch though. "Ohai?" mode "I'm about to surprise you if you come near me" mode To this day is still the only picture I have of Torrasque the Tarantula in his take home container. Perhaps I'll snag a couple pics this week now that we have a spider thread Besides, we all secretly know Romandad hates spiders but will keep clicking anyway so keep those spidey pics coming! emanon Report post Posted November 8, 2011 Scariest "good bug" I have come across recently. First one I saw was about a year ago, and seen about 3 more since then @ our Palm Desert place. I guess they are somewhat common in the South West desert areas? It's called a Sun Spider, but not really a spider. I thought it was a scorpion at first sight and about shat myself. Non-Poisonous, but angry little fucker. They are not afraid to stand their ground, but generally succumb to a good wack from a slipper. That being said, from the looks of the jaws I wouldn't want to get bitten by one. The ones I have seen weren't more than 2" long total, which is still a big fcuking bug in my book. http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2009/07/29/sun...er-or-solpugid/ The spider that took out the bird, FUUUUCK THAT! I wouldn't tackle that with anything less than RD's shotgun pistol.

Article about the golden orb weaver in 2nd pic here, not dangerous to humans. 1st pic is a huntsman and is not dangerous to humans either. Probably what they call a "house spider" in Australia. House spiders are much smaller and they prefer to hide than get about on the ceiling. Their bite won't kill you, but can make you go through hell (sweating, muscle pains, vomiting, headaches) if not treated. The huntsman bite on the other hand just stings for a bit. One that should be killed with fire. Have its ashes pissed on, then burned with gasoline and fire again. Get a grip!
blylek Report post Posted November 9, 2011 Is that an insect part poking up out of the sand in that Tarantula pic? The annual tarantula migration/mating season just finished up here a week or so ago, which is pretty cool. On average we would have about 3 or 4 males per week for a few weeks, cruising along in our driveway...we'd pick em up in a cardboard box and take em down in the canyon where, hopefully they would find a nice big female to bang before kicking the 8-legged bucket. Little guys, as far as tarantulas go, but still pretty cool to watch. Have never spotted a female. We used to take them to our son's mid-school science teacher, until we found out he just fed them to his big female tarantula.
