Kerplop Report post Posted February 11, 2017 Got to check out the heads being assembled. Figured I'd share a pic of the entire bottom end assembled before it got flipped. Also, the new valve guides are a huuuuuuuuuge improvement over the old stuff.

Kerplop Report post Posted February 17, 2017 Resurrection wasn't going to be easy or painless. Keep it up, you're doing something really special. You're absolutely right. I knew what I was getting myself into, and in the end I am incredibly happy with the outcome. Seeing the engine nearly finished and almost in one piece ready to be started up is.... at the very least... incredible to see. Kerplop Report post Posted February 20, 2017 Stressing a bit. Machinist moves at end of month. - Bottom end is finished - Chain assembly finished - Heads not together just yet - Fuel system ready to go - ECU is ready to go I'm just waiting on him and asked him today if we are on for dyno day this weekend and he didn't sound too terribly positive. He's dealing with some health crap right now, so I'm going to be severely disappointed if dyno day does not happen.

Kerplop Report post Posted February 20, 2017 Hang in there Trying. I mean.... I guess worst case scenario I have to just try getting it running with the engine in the car but it would be nice to have the peace of mind of knowing the engine is broken in and ready to be tuned with a basemap back from the machinist. I guess we'll see how things pan out this week. My anxiety is rising. This is the most stressful part of my entire build so far. Kerplop Report post Posted February 20, 2017 On a side note it's my girlfriend's birthday and we're going to the best italian restaurant in town, so at least something is going well? lol
Kerplop Report post Posted February 22, 2017 Alright, spoke to the machinist. He's extended the time he needs to move and told me we will absolutely be doing dyno day before he takes off and moves. However, it doesn't sound like it's going to be this weekend. Heads are almost finished though and I'm dropping off what should be the last bit of hardware tomorrow. At this point we just need to finish the heads, route water lines and oil lines, get the fuel system hooked up with the ignition system and we should be good. Only issue right now is a few custom tools he needed to make to deal with the heads, hence the delay. But at least he has reduced my anxiety by guaranteeing that he isn't going anywhere till we finish the motor.
CallMeJarob Report post Posted February 22, 2017 That's fantastic news, certainly a lot better than getting it in the car first. Going to be an exciting time
Kerplop Report post Posted February 23, 2017 Snag: We are prepping to get the heads cleared and finished. The blending on the heads is done. The guy that repaired the heads didn't add tons of extra material, so what blending could be done is done. As well, the new guides have also been shaved to provide better flow. The snag is that JE pistons cut the valve relief wrong on all of my pistons for the intake and it's off by 1mm. In the world of standard eyeballing, that may not seem like a lot, but in the world of engine clearances that's the difference between space in the chamber, and valves kissing pistons. My machinist can fix it, but dyno day will not be this weekend because of this snag. It sounds like next weekend is going to be dyno day. That said.... everything else is fitting. New hardware throughout the head, the block, all new fasteners ordered and in place. Things are going incredibly smoothly aside from the piston snag. I've emailed JE pistons and hope they'll be willing to help me, or at least make it right. On top of this, originally the pistons were the wrong weight, costing me rebalancing the entire bottom end. That ended up being fine since we did reduce mass, and now it's balanced better than it ever was at the factory.... but at the additional push of the engine build lagging behind, and machinist costs. Still stressed. Slightly annoyed. In the end, still a first world problem, and this is still going to happen.

Kerplop Report post Posted February 23, 2017 Are we there yet, are we there yet?? Long as there are no more critical snags, next weekend should be there! I wasn't happy when the first words out of his mouth were, "Well, we ran into something critical..." but we'll get past it. Kerplop Report post Posted February 25, 2017 Huge snag and need some HUGE HELP. Currently the seats that were installed are too short on one head. We can only shim so much off the valves, and therefore, to make up the difference, need thinner shims. They are 37mm valve shims, and we need shims ranging from 3.3mm to 4mm thickness. If I cannot source these before friday and have them here beore friday, there will be no dyno day as the machinist moves in 2 weeks. FML. Kerplop Report post Posted February 28, 2017 Ok guys, machinist picked up overnight package. Current status: - Shims look good. He is cutting valves and will get that finished this afternoon. - Some of the valve springs had pitting. No bueno. He took the liberty of ordering me beehive springs. They'll be here tomorrow morning. Expectation is to have the heads completely finished by tomorrow night. - Viton seals are here today, picked them up, and rest of my hardware and washers will be here tomorrow. Will drop everything off tomorrow night. WE ARE ON COURSE FOR DYNO DAY. Fingers crossed, nothing else comes up. Sounds like all the detrimental BS is out of the way at this point.
