Kerplop Report post Posted July 24, 2017 Started working on the headlight motors tonight. I thought they were toast but they're actually just fine. So now I'm in the process of going through those. The headlights hardness should be pretty damn simple. Headlights aren't all that complex. I found a fiat wiring diagram that explains the relays setup (uses only 3 relays), for up and down. I've already put in new wire and solder and it's far more responsive. I need to actually go through it with some silicon grease and make sure it stays lubricated. I'm also going to rotate the gears so that the wear spots aren't as bad. The teeth are wearing down a bit on the gears. I just want to know why they made them out of that shit plastic instead of some cast gears back in the day. Would have lasted a lot longer. Kerplop Report post Posted July 29, 2017 Played with the fuel map more yesterday and it is running so much better. No temp sensor right now so it's assuming it's warmed up so starts are stubborn. Still on the rich side. But as it stands, once the car is together I could go drive it on this map. My good friend nate came over (he helped me put the engine in, one of my friends who was there that day), we fixed his RX8 today, and then I fired it up for him now that i've made some more tweaks. https://www.facebook.com/derek.mccallister/...54586833666744/

Kerplop Report post Posted August 3, 2017 Ok so i got the GPS module wired up and working for testing. Previously used a simplytronics gps receiver but moved to an adafruit "ultimate gps" breakout board. Tried it the other night and it worked flawlessly. It's pulling in tons of data, accurate down to the foot with the antenna in my window. Should be incredibly accurate once it's out in the open in the car. Currently working on programming to map the range of the stepper motor and then the GPS on speed. Basically will parse the mph data that I can receive into a range on the stepper motor, and it'll increase or decrease steps. Here's the before with the simplytronics, which was spitting out data but for some reason I couldn't get the data parsed. The module was also much larger. And the new module, with the antenna even, is much much smaller, far more quick, and super precise. 4 pins, that's it.

Destructo Report post Posted August 4, 2017 Awesome stuff D! The amount of work you put into this is incredible. Kerplop Report post Posted August 4, 2017 So I worked with the arduino program i was using and basically ended up doing this: > set speed of stepper motor >> set max steps of motor >>> set serial rx/tx for gps >>>> set loop to read gps speed in mph >>>>> map gps speed (0-200), map stepper speed range (0-whatever) >>>>>> constant variable if statement in loop that if the speed is greater than 0 to set the motorspeed variable to whatever the GPS speed is), otherwise set to 0 if 0. Used the > just so you can see the order in which i did it in. The issue isn't so much going to be the actual gps data but getting the actual stepper motor range set properly. So in this case, I'll get the stepper motor in place, adjust needle accordingly to rest properly, play with the range a little bit on the stepper motor and then map it exactly to that. Once that's done I can throw it in my passenger seat on my little 924, put the antenna on the dash, go for a ride and see if the gauge properly responds. Plug the usb of my arduino into my stereo and it should do the trick. To power it in the lambo i'll just run a 12v power into a little 5v regulator so when the car is on, anything powered by microcontrollers is on too. Kerplop Report post Posted August 6, 2017 Got the headlight project box done tonight. Holy crap they run WAY better than just hooking them up regularly. I used some heavy diodes in them and used some stronger grounding wire and supply wire and they are super snappy. In case anyone is interested in DIY and need to fix your headlights and is familiar with stripboard and diodes and wiring i'll pop this in there. I'm using it slightly different than this, but this will work just the same. So basically the headlight switch will pop them up with power applied, with power not applied they'll stay down. 87A is closed "at all times" when the switch power is off, 87 gets power when it's on and grounds the generator motors. Pretty simple. Used this as a reference. http://www.network54.com/Forum/12159/threa...+(wiring+issue)
Kerplop Report post Posted August 31, 2017 Brief update. headlights are installed. Box goes in next, wired up and ready to go. Replacing all the old wiring with LEDs and replacing all of the oldschool aftermarket stuff with LEDs and microcontrollers as well. The ultrasmith stuff that was on this car was astonishingly awesome for it's time. However, plan on updating with more modern tech and redoing the same stuff, just in a more modern way. I want to still pay homage to the oldschool ultrasmith stuff that was done to this car. Turn signals, brake lights, turn signals, all going LED. I've gutted out all of the plugs for them and am working on retrofitting them. Got the tune leaned out even more and the car fires up without a single moment of hesitation. Turn key, prime pump, turn to start, VROOM. The head gasket my machinist used was pretty thin, and he went on the smaller side of torque from my understanding. Head #2 is allowing about a dime sized drop of coolant after 15 minutes of running. Need to re-torque. According to other owners, after using lubrication on the threads, nearly 50% of the initial clamping force was gone when it was time for re-torque. Going to re-torque the heads this weekend and ensure all is well to make sure we're good to go. There's such a TINY wall between the coolant wall it's not even funny. Things are going smoothly, nearly ready to start putting in the coolant. Gauges are all here, GPS speedometer is nearing completion.
