Porsche GT3 vs Z07

Apart from not being able to figure out if the Corvette driver is the biggest moron I have ever seen, and the perfect example of why you dont do track days with the general public, or if the supposed instructor is the bigger moron for not getting this idiot off the track, the one thing this video illustrates is that the Z07 has a VERY hard time with a Gt3 straightline, and with both being automatic. A manual would get slaughtered.

I had a new C7 with the automatic for 4 days...that auto gearbox is garbage. GM really should give it a proper F1-style transmission. Overall I like the ZO6 over the GT3 (I'm admittedly not a big Porsche guy) but I do think in the GT3 is probably the better track car...But the ZO7 is a lot sexier, has more presence, and as a road car fits the bill better.

The Z07 has a completely different transmission than the C7, its proclaimed to shift faster than the Porsche PDK.. I drove a manual Z07 and a GT3 together, and I was somewhat shocked that the GT3 felt just as fast, if not faster especially from dead stop. On the street I liked driving the Z07 with the manual though ( albeit these were strictly for fun drives where pounding on the manual was more exciting than a self shifting transmisssion) on a daily basis and in traffic that would more than likely get old. The build quality between the 2 is night and day, the Porsche ruins the POS in this area, even though the POS is better than its ever been. Visually, Im a Porsche guy, but I do think the POS looks pretty bad ass. I wouldnt mind either car, but pretty much think the GT3 RS is the end all.

Me and co worker who do a lot of track days together watched this and our jaws just dropped. Unreal.

As for the Plastic mess-06 straight line I watched a head to head with it and the GTR I think and the GTR was pulling up top on the Plastic mess-06, didn't seem to make sense on paper given more hp and less weight. They came to the conclusion the aero on the POS, the Gurney Flap is really creating a lot of downforce and drag. They took it off but ran slower lap times as it really needed the aero on the track. All in all I love both of them but GT3 is on the short list for my GTR replacement car.

Thats an easy answer. Diablo Tuner just did a back to back Test on the Z , first pull (auto A8) 550/603 trq in FL. 88* or so. they did a second pull with Temps in the dyno room up and it lost 50whp . Down to 500. I am NOT a fan of the 1.7 liter blower and heat. The slightest heat pulls tremendous timing. They are awesome for the first hit of the day. I would say the Z on the straight was prob around 480 by the time the temps reached 240-260 coolant.

GM screwed up with that crappy blower. They should have at the very least put a 2.3 ran less boost. OR put a bigger motor ( 427 and then threw boost at it.)

I am willing to bet the Porsche losses maybe 15HP after a full season. where the Z is prob near 06Z power lol.

OK, results are in.

For the purpose of this discussion, we are going to discuss the real world results, which are based on more than one pull, at full operating temp, etc.

I reported that the car made 550/603 bone stock.

I went back out 2 minutes later and saw it make 500/550...umm, where'd the power go?

Each subsequent pull from there made the same power. Clearly the first pull is a glory pull, but the pcm puts that fun to rest quickly.

We immediately realized our goal was to allow it to make safe, consistent power, and I believe we achieved that.

The dyno sheet below shows the results of the stock tune after more than one pull, compared to our 93 octane Diablo tune, again after more than one pull.

You can see a solid gain of 50 rwhp and 50+ ft/lbs over stock in these conditions.

Theres a solid 20 ft/lbs down low, before the power started to drop off, so there are gains everywhere, no matter what.

The car is very consistent after the second pull, I have overlays of the stock tune at 500/550 4 or 5 times over, and same for the tuned pulls, they all overlay almost exactly, the results below are not some sampling of the best pulls, but represent the average power seen on all pulls.

I think people are already pulling the factory blower off of these cars and installing Prochargers and the like and are seeing massive benefits in doing so. But to me that kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a 650hp factory car with warranty.

Corvette is getting hotter and hotter lately, moving up from cheap polyester to regular polyester.

I have to say, being forced into an $8k upgrade just so the cars works the way it should stock is fcuking humiliating.

Completely agree. They should have been this way from the factory.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ran into a guy at the track with a new C7 with every option including Z07 pkg- auto tranny. He loved everything about it except the overheating issue.

Said GM is "building me a new one and this one is my loaner car in the mean time". They are building a 2016 manual for him, and he said they gave zero push back when confronted with the heat soak issue.

Is GM going to give everyone with a problem (which seems to be everyone with an automatic transmission) a brand new car?

What happens to the old car?

Are there going to be a ton of crappy C7s for sale in the very near future?

How is this not a huge recall?

How can GM afford to build people a new car, and let them turn in the first car? (maybe cheaper than huge recall???)

How is there not a class action against GM for this widespread problem - and like emanon said - being forced to pay to fix a problem just so the car runs the way it should? That's crazy.

I don't understand.

Heat soak has to do with the tiny overdriven blower rather than the tranny. No easy fix and pretty unlikely they will have it for 2016, although many of us 2001 Plastic mess-06 owners will remember the big 2002 upgrades.

My reference to transmission was that I thought the problem is only with automatics, and manual transmission versions were okay. Not so? I haven't followed it closely.

No, the problem has been there on all of them. My question would be what it is he thinks GM has done to fix the problem, and whether it really fixes it.

when I was at the track this week auto c7 z oh six was running 10.9@125 with an intake, i think it still would pull any stock gtr off a roll

my bolt on E85 GTR ran 10.40

It's amazing that Viper sales aren't through the roof with the Z0(6)/7's heatsoak issues.

Agreed. But we will only see it in the Q2 or Q3 sales results surely?

Eagerly awaiting the Viper with near to 800hp. Hellcat like. Shame I will never fit in a Viper at 6ft8!
