If people are not too familiar about guns (which in England where they pretty much outlaw them completely, people likely are not), then they can believe that random ammunition lying around can be highly dangerous if say sucked up by a lawnmower. He's thinking it's filled with gunpowder, so therefore it's dangerous. Now if he was scared to death of ammunition just for the sake of it being ammunition, that would be different. As for how he looks, well judging how tough a man is by how he looks doesn't tell you much. There are some guys who look like nerds who can turn out to be Navy SEAL tough and then there are "tough" looking guys who are actually wimps when you really put the pressure on them.
