The statement made by the perp as seen on video and as I quoted above absolutely is not unique to this event. In nearly every event where westerners were attacked by Muslim terrorists, the reason and justification were the same:

Boston bombing, 9/11, 7/11, Times Square bomb attempt, Chicago bomb attempt, Mali, Afghanistan 'friendly' fire, Benghazi,......

This is 100% not true. Most of these people are not "crazy". They often are well educated and known by their peers to be fairly normal. I'm not an expert on the topic but I'm sure they wouldn't exhibit the same signs as a psychopath would (ie a completely lacking in empathy and such) to be considered insane like some serial killers are.

 

The problem is not exactly religion but blind faith. Faith demands no rationality or explanation, which explains the irrational things it leads to. Irrational things as small as genuine beliefs horoscopes to as big as killing people because you think your god told you to do it.

Yes. Slightly OT (but maybe not), most higher up terrorists are well-educated (often in Western schools), wealthy, well-traveled and well-connected.

As el capitano has said, no facts have been released about the two suspects and an investigation will take time.

 

Opinions of how religion is the route cause of attacks like this are misguided. An individual with deep feelings about an ideal, no matter how righteous it is to the rest of the world, will always try and justify it to themselves through any means they can, which for the most part is through religion. This doesn't make other followers of the same religion nut-jobs. Extremists hide behind anything they can, take religion away from a fanatic and they will find something else to push their agenda.

Why is everyone unyielding to bring up the role certain religious ideologies play? I know these threads won't allow it, but I don't see why it should not be questioned. People have no problems blaming liberal, conservative, or communist ideals in spite of who it offends. Is religion any different? It's incredible to see the knee-jerk opposition to those that dare bring it up. It should not be immune from criticism nor should anyone feel pressured not to!

I disagree that this is 'out of my ass' as you say. Many perps of these type of attacks have credited their actions to what I've brought up, and it continues to happen. These are their justifications and nearly all aren't as uneducated or mentally unstable as people would like them to be. There is enough evidence to trace these reactions to religious doctrine. If you want to hate a certain group, that's your prerogative. Making statements, like the popular media and leaders of the community have, to purge its role and prevent any backlash to that community, is outright dishonest. Do you feel more comfortable stigmatizing a mentally ill community instead, since people have brought that up with ease? Nothing should be off the table. Out of respect for some of the members and the social cohesion that has been built up, I won't bring it up.

As capt_chaos has pointed out, IMO, we shouldn't judge until we have the facts. Gun rights people got very upset when in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting a lot of people starting jumping down their throats. We should not do that with regards to Muslims or anything here.

 

However, if due to religion, things I would look into are for example populations of Muslims that become radicalized and who do not learn to integrate into society, but rather form their own enclosed "societies-within-a-society." They need to learn to speak the language and to respect the principle of religious freedom and tolerance if they are choosing to live in a free country. Otherwise, it is going to possibly lead to a structural problem at some point if/when the Muslims of the extremist variety start out-numbering the non-Muslims.

 

One question also is what percentage of the Muslim population supports the actions of the extremists. From what I have read, there is a large percentage of the Muslim population that while it doesn't engage in violent acts itself, does support such acts.

It's not about guns. It's not about religion. If you eliminate those 2 you still have crazy people that will still hold on to some nutso idea. Hell, they could say the moon told them to do it.

There really isn´t more violence postulated in Islam than it is in the Bible or Talmud(and yes I have read a far amount of both). The problem with Islam is that most of the spiritual leaders of Islam preach in shitholes and dictatorships(so called "monarchies) where they have control of further education therefore dumbing the muslims down and making them blind believers of everything they say for they are the only authority the people know. How can you debate somethig when it is the only thing you know? Your only source of information? They then export those people to western societies to sway the weak minded and problem riddled psychopaths.

I just find it scary that so many people truly believe that it is a problem of religions without even knowing the religion. A testament of the influence the media has and the laziness people bring to the table and probably their own readiness for violence and intolerance.

Its not like people are on a witch hunt for one particular religion because they dont understand it. Step back, its much simpler then that. You have all these atrocities across the world happening, and the people responsible all claiming its in the name of Islam. No i dont believe we should start corralling all the muslims (becasue thats a brilliant plan ) but the main issue lies in why the trend seems to alwasy lean towards that religion. And to be honest, it could have nothing to do with the religion at all, it could simply be that the middle east, where it just so happens that religion is the majority, is just the way they wage wars. But fact is, its still the tying factory between the majority of these attacks and requires us to look into it further.
