Don't read if squeamish or enjoy bananas.

The Brazilian Wandering Spider

250px-Wandering_spider.jpg

While vacationing in Brazil, you decide you want the full experience and venture off to pick bananas with the locals. As you wrestle bundles out of the tree, you feel something fall on you. And that something looks like the Devil incarnate.

The Brazilian wandering spider, or Spawn of Satan from here on out, can get to be a whopping ten-inches long (that's leg to leg). It's one of the most aggressive spiders in the world, no doubt emboldened by generations of much larger creatures running and screaming at the sight of it.

They like to rest wherever it is cool and dark and nothing pisses them off more than having their resting place disturbed.

Every bite from the Spawn of Satan--twice as potent as the black widow's--will result in excruciating pain. This is due to the fact that, aside from the neurotoxin, their bites contain high levels of serotonin. While the neurotoxin is busy shutting down your primary functions, that serotonin is heading straight for your brain. Once there, it'll cause intense tremors throughout your body and incredible pain.

While not every bite has enough hellfire to take down a fully-grown man, it should be noted that another effect of the spider's bite is priapism (named after the Greek god with wooden balls). "What's that?" you ask. Well friends, imagine taking viagra and achieving that rock-hard boner you've been looking for, but instead of a little blue pill helping you achieve it, it's that thing up there. And instead of it being a pleasurable experience to your loins, it's extremely painful and lasts for hours. And fixing it may involve the doctor puncturing your manhood with a sharp object to release the blood.

Remember that "most aggressive spider" thing we mentioned? Well the Spawn of Satan also has another common title: "World's Deadliest Spider." If that dose of neurotoxin and serotonin goes unchecked, it will shut down your body. Permanently. Luckily these nightmare-inducing monsters reside in the warm climates of South America. After all, when are you ever going to be in South America?

Oh hey, and remember when we said they like to hide in dark corners? One of their favorite spots is in shipping containers, such as boxes of bananas.

I feel so sorry for that girl. Would it have made any difference if she went to the doctors on the day of the bite? Anti-venom would prevent a chunk of her ear being removed?

I'm almost positive that she did go and was administered the anti-venom and that is what kept the necrosis centralized. Generally anywhere the venom touches (if not treated quickly) will start to die and decay. Looks like those were just the immediate days after and pics from the removal and suturing parts of that beautiful adventure. She also captured the spider which also points to her/parents knowing they needed to take it with them for identification and proper treatment.

I've seen entire thighs that were not treated soon enough fall victim to necrosis from that little shit stains bite. When I say entire I mean balls to knee completely necrotic.

Fuckin' ugh. Perfect time for the 'Nothing to do here' jet pack meme.

Look on the positive side, if you don't like spiders, at least you can make yourself more knowledgeable ABOUT spiders in this thread and learn from them.

For instance - some may not have even been aware of a brown recluse and in many areas the recluse is actually more common anymore than it used to be.

If you get bit by a spider and you have a reaction:

- Kill the spider, but don't smash it to the point of being unrecognizable, instead, put it in a container and bring it WITH YOU to urgent care or the ER so they can figure out what it was and get the right antivenom. If you can't, then try to remember the shape. (It had a violin shape, or it was round, or it had a fat abdomen, etc, something distinct)

- Try not to panic. The more you panic the faster your heart beats. Stay calm as you can.

So disgusting and sad for the girl.

I wonder why creatures like spiders,snakes,... were given such power with their poisonous strenghts. It amazes me that they were able to develop this. Yuck. :'(

Why are there fish that can also kill humans through venom. Why are there jellyfish that can kill a human? There are many venomous creatures in nature. As to how creatures developed that way over time, I am not sure, it seems awfully overkill to have venom capable of killing a human when they only need to kill a small animal and/or insects... well... that would be a good question for a biologist lol.

Not a bilologist, but the stronger the venom the less you need to use of it which means less energy is beeing used in reproducing the used amount.

Yes, brown recluse bites have to be treated immediately, or else you can lose a bodypart.

Interesting factoid, you are, on average, within seven feet of a spider any given time of day (some are microscopic though).

I wouldn't be concentrating on hating people right now, I'd be more worried about how itchy your leg is and wondering what is there. And why is your lower back itchy too?

Is it your shirt you are wearing or something else?

Almost makes the tiny spiders crawling up the tiny hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

  • 2 years later...

Found this fun one in the back yard today. Can anyone tell me what it is? I blew it up large to show detail. It was about the size of a nickel

Overcome your fear... or don't. :icon_mrgreen:

I've killed brown recluse and black widows around my house. Always seem to like hiding out in wood piles. Wife got bit in the leg by a recluse years ago, still has the scar, but it wasn't life threatening or anything. When I was a kid we would catch spiders in individual jars. Once we had about twenty we would throw them all together and have a "spider war" and bet on the winner. Always some little harmless looking fucker that would bite the bigger guys in the leg and kill them instantly. As for the picture, I have no idea. They all look the same smashed.

Looks like a garden spider...almost like an orb weaver type spider, although the front legs look a little segmented like those in the widow family. But the abdomen looks orb weaver-ish to me. Post it up on the spider forum on reddit, you'll have a quick answer I'll bet...

Posted it on a spider forum because with redit I would have had to post it on a file sharing site first which is a PIA
